Managing Southern Root-knot Nematode in Kentucky High Tunnels Using Grafted Tomato

چکیده

Infection by root-knot nematode ( Meloidogyne spp.; RKN) leads to root galling and reduces the host plant’s ability take up water nutrients. Protected cropping systems, such as high tunnels, create conducive environments for RKN through increased soil temperatures more intensive crop production. In Kentucky, tunnel production has in past 10 years, with tomato being most cultivated crop. This contributed a lack of rotation pressure from RKN. Tomato grafting RKN-resistant rootstock is nonchemical management strategy that shown promise other regions United States. The primary objective this 2-year, two-site study (Knox Boyle Counties) was determine whether using grafted resistant could be viable tunnels naturally infested incognita . rootstocks included ‘Arnold’, ‘Maxifort’, ‘Shin Cheong Gang’, ‘Estamino’. ‘Primo Red’ ‘Cherokee Purple’ were scions nongrafted controls Knox Counties, respectively. 2020 2021 County, three four treatments produced at least 38% higher yield than control. Grafted had 44% fewer eggs/g dry compared control both years. 2022 five times greater all 2021, dried treatments. years locations, ‘Arnold’ ‘Estamino’ lower population densities roots controls. Utilization will help Kentucky growers maintain productivity soils RKN, but should combined methods long-term resiliency system.

Cost Benefit Analysis of Using Grafted Transplants for Root-knot Nematode Management in Organic Heirloom Tomato Production

Growers are looking for sustainable alternatives to methyl bromide as a soil fumigant that are effective and economical. Increased demand for organically produced fruits and vegetables has also contributed to the need for environmentally friendly soil-borne disease control methods. Grafting may be a valuable tool for vegetable growers to cope with pest management challenges in production of cuc...

Root - knot nematode ( Meloidogyne incognita ) management using botanicals in tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum )

Root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, is the major limiting factor in tomato production in many regions of the world including Ethiopia. For its management, different plant species (botanicals) are being tried in different forms as an alternative to nematicides. The nematicidal potential of baker tree (Milletiaferruginea), bitter leaf (Vernonia amygodalina), parthenium (Parthenium hysterop...

Chitosan Increases Tomato Root Colonization by Pochonia chlamydosporia and Their Combination Reduces Root-Knot Nematode Damage

The use of biological control agents could be a non-chemical alternative for management of Meloidogyne spp. [root-knot nematodes (RKN)], the most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes for horticultural crops worldwide. Pochonia chlamydosporia is a fungal parasite of RKN eggs that can colonize endophytically roots of several cultivated plant species, but in field applications the fungus shows a low...

Scanning Electron Microscope Study of the Root-knot Nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) on Tomato Root.

This study examines the types of structural information that can be gained by utilizing the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a cryofracture technique to examine the host-parasite interaction. Roots of tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Marglobe, were cultured aseptically and inoculated with the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. Twenty-four hours to four weeks after inoculation, ...
